Lattice effect algebras can be represented as total algebras, although they were initially defined as partial algebras. There is an open question whether the variety of distributive lattice effect algebras coincides with the variety \({\mathcal V}_*\) generated by all MV-algebras and the horizontal sum of two 3-element MV-chains (the \textit{diamond}). The author reduces this question by proving that \({\mathcal V}_*\) is the variety of distributive lattice effect algebras satisfying three identities. It remains to decide whether these identities are satisfied by all distributive lattice effect algebras.
