An instanton sheaf on \({\mathbb P}^n\), \(n \geq 2\) is a torsion free coherent sheaf \(E\) on \({\mathbb P}^n\) with vanishing certain twisted cohomology groups. A special class of instanton sheaves are the mathematical instanton bundles, i.e. the locally free instanton sheaves on \({\mathbb P}^{2m+1}\) of rank \(2m\) and of trivial splitting type. The extensive study of mathematical instanton bundles, starting from the original paper of \textit{C. Okonek} and \textit{H. Spindler} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 364, 35--50 (1986; Zbl 0568.14009)] is generally motivated by gauge theory. The goal of this paper is to extend the study of mathematical instanton bundles in two directions: the inclusion of even-dimensional projective spaces and the analysis of more general sheaves allowing non-locally free sheaves of arbitrary rank. It turns out that many of the known results regarding mathematical instanton bundles generalize to instanton sheaves.
