Abstract: We study a class of torsion-free sheaves on complex projective spaces which generalize the much studied mathematical instanton bundles. Instanton sheaves can be obtained as cohomologies of linear monads and are shown to be semistable if its rank is not too large, while semistable torsion-free sheaves satisfying certain cohomological conditions are instanton. We also study a few examples of moduli spaces of instanton sheaves.

An instanton sheaf on \({\mathbb P}^n\), \(n \geq 2\) is a torsion free coherent sheaf \(E\) on \({\mathbb P}^n\) with vanishing certain twisted cohomology groups. A special class of instanton sheaves are the mathematical instanton bundles, i.e. the locally free instanton sheaves on \({\mathbb P}^{2m+1}\) of rank \(2m\) and of trivial splitting type. The extensive study of mathematical instanton bundles, starting from the original paper of \textit{C. Okonek} and \textit{H. Spindler} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 364, 35--50 (1986; Zbl 0568.14009)] is generally motivated by gauge theory. The goal of this paper is to extend the study of mathematical instanton bundles in two directions: the inclusion of even-dimensional projective spaces and the analysis of more general sheaves allowing non-locally free sheaves of arbitrary rank. It turns out that many of the known results regarding mathematical instanton bundles generalize to instanton sheaves.
