A class of nonlinear large-scale interconnected systems with matched and mismatched uncertainties is considered under suitable assumptions. No statistical information about the uncertainties is imposed. A sliding mode strategy, using only output information, is presented to stabilize the system locally. Global results can be also obtained in certain situations. First, a composite sliding surface is synthesized, so that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable when restricted to the surface. Then, a decentralized control scheme is proposed, and a reachability condition is developed. An illustrative example is also presented.
