A function \(f:R\to R\) (\(R\) -- the real line) is defined to be in the class Baire\(^{*}\) 1 if and only if for every nonempty perfect set \(P\), there is an open interval \(I\) such that \(I\cap P\neq 0\) and \(f\mid I\cap P\) is continuous. A function \(f\) is said to be approximately \(\alpha\)- smooth \((\alpha\geq 0)\) at \(x\), if and only if, \(\lim\text{apr}_{h\to 0}\Delta^ 2f(x,h)/h^ \alpha=0\), where \(\Delta^ 2f(x,h)=f(x+h)+f(x- h)-2f(x)\). The author proves a general result, one consequence of which asserts: If a function \(f\) is approximately continuous and approximately \(\alpha\)-smooth for any \(\alpha>0\) then \(f\) is in Baire* 1.
