Given a positive operator \(T\) on a Banach lattice \(E\), properties of the spectrum are considered. One of the central theorems establishes that if zero is an element of the unbounded connected component of the resolvent of \(T\) then a power of \(T\) dominates a multiple of the identity. This implies several known results, for example if the spectrum of a lattice isomorphism \(T\) is \(\{1\}\), then \(T\) is the identity operator. The question of whether the peripheral spectrum of a positive operator is cyclic is addressed in the following theorem. If the spectrum of \(T\) is contained in the spectral circle (and satisfies the condition above for the resolvent), then the spectrum of \(T\) is cyclic. Another central result of the paper states that if the spectrum of \(T\) is \(\{1\}\) and if negative powers of \(T\) satisfy a certain growth condition, then \(T\) is greater than or equal to the identity answering, for certain cases, a question posed by Huijsmans and de Pagter. Consequences and further questions involving the spectrum are discussed.
