The projection into the center of operators in a Banach lattice (Q1094652)

Let E be an order complete Banach lattice. It is shown that the band projection \(P: L^ r(E)\to Z(E)\) (from the regular operators \(L^ r(E)\) onto the center Z(E) of L(E)) is contractive with respect to the operator norm. This result is applied to give a proof of the following known fact: If \(A\in L(E)\) is the generator of a positive \(C_ 0\)-semigroup, then \(A+\| A\| I\geq 0\).
