The author constructs a non-abelian difference set with \(D\) parameters \((100,45,20)\), a parameter triple for which the non-existence of an abelian difference set is known (see \textit{R. L. McFarland} [``Differences sets in abelian groups of order \(4p^ 2\)'', Mitt. Math. Sem. Gießen 192, 1-70 (1989; Zbl 0695.05013)]); moreover, \(D\) admits \(-1\) as a weak multiplier. This is a very important result, since it is the first example showing that a non-abelian difference set may exist even if there is no abelian difference set with the same parameters. Using a well-known recursive construction for difference sets with parameters of the form \((4t^ 2, 2t^ 2- t, t^ 2- t)\), \(D\) then gives rise to an infinite family of non-abelian difference sets of this type (where, in all cases, no corresponding abelian difference set is known).
