Let \(D = G/K\) be an irreducible symmetric tube domain of rank \(r\) with Shilov boundary \(S = G/P\) where \(P = MAN\) is a maximal parabolic subgroup of \(G\). Here \(A\) and \(N\) are abelian Lie subgroups with Lie algebras \({\mathfrak g}\) and \({\mathfrak n}\) and \(\dim {\mathfrak a} = 1\). -- For each \(\nu \in ({\mathfrak a}^*)^\mathbb{C}\), the complexification of \({\mathfrak a}^*\), let \(\pi (\nu)\) denote the representation of \(G\) induced from the character \(1 \otimes e^\nu \otimes 1\) of \(P\). \(\pi (\nu)\) can be realized on \(L^2 (S)\) and, under the action of \(K\), decomposes into irreducibles and is multiplicity free as a \(K\)-representation. Let \(2 \delta\) denote the trace of the adjoint action of \({\mathfrak a}\) on \({\mathfrak n}\), and let \(X (\nu)\) be the space of \(K\)-finite vectors. Then the invariant hermitian form on \(X (\nu)\) is determined by an intertwining operator \(A (\nu)\) from \(X (\nu)\) to \(X (2 \delta - \nu)\). The main purpose of the paper is to give an explicit formula for the eigenvalue of \(A (\nu)\) on each \(K\)-irreducible submodule (Theorem 3.2). The approach to this is as follows. Every \(K\)-irreducible submodule is of highest weight \(- {\mathfrak m} = - (m_1 \gamma_1 + \cdots + m_r \gamma_r)\), where \(\gamma_1 < \cdots < \gamma_r\) are the Harish-Chandra strongly orthogonal roots and the \(m_j\) are integers such that \(m_1 \geq \cdots \geq m_r\). On each such submodule \(V^{- {\mathfrak m}}\) the operator \(A (\nu)\) acts by a scalar \(A (\nu, - {\mathfrak m})\), and the authors establish a recursion formula for the numbers \(A (\nu, - {\mathfrak m})\) (Theorem 2.2). They also deduce from Theorem 2.2 a reducibility criterion for \(\pi (\nu)\) and determine the composition factors of \(X (\nu)\). In addition, similar representations are treated for the universal covering group of \(\widehat G\).
