The author studies the fixed subgraph properties of families of commuting contractions acting on an infinite connected rayless graph. He proves several results, among them that if the underlying graph is connected, rayless (i.e. does not contain a one-way infinite path) and interval-finite (i.e. any two vertices are joined by only finitely many shortest paths), then a family of commuting contractions always leaves a finite nonempty subgraph invariant. For some graph classes the invariant subgraph can be chosen as a complete graph. The author also shows that for any family of commuting contractions of a tree without infinite path there is a common fixed vertex or a common fixed edge.
