The authors study the penalty approximation to the motion of a free particle constrained to stay inside an angular domain of \(\mathbb{R}^2\). They choose a class of penalty approximations for which the restitution coefficient vanishes in the limiting problem and characterize precisely the limit of the sequence of solutions to the approximated problem when the first impact does not take place at a corner. It is proved that if the first impact point is not at a vertex, then the limit of the approximations exists and is described by Moreau's rule [\textit{J. J. Moreau}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. II 296, 1473-1476 (1983; Zbl 0517.70018)] for inelastic impacts. The proofs use some tools of dynamical systems theory.
