It is always possible to find real equations for germs of plane curves up to topological equivalence. Lee Rudolph asked the author if it is possible to find real equations for complex polynomials up to topological equivalence. The author provides a negative answer to this question and, using his method also to the following natural question: Can two topologically equivalent polynomials be connected by a continuous family of topologically equivalent polynomials?
