Let \(H_{1}\) be the usual Hardy space on the unit disc \({\mathbf D}\). The authors prove the following Theorem: Let \(1\leq q < \infty\) and \(1/r=1/q-1/2\). Suppose that \((b_{k})\in \ell_{r}\) if \(1\leq q < 2\) and \((b_{k})\in \ell_{\infty}\) if \(2\leq q < \infty\). Let \(\delta>0\) and let \((n_{k})_{k=1}^{\infty}\subset {\mathbf N}\) satisfy \(n_{k+1}/n_{k}\geq 1 +\delta |b_{k}|^{q}\) for all positive integers \(k\). Then there exists a constant \(C>0\) dependent on \((b_{k}), \delta\) and \(q\) such that \[ \left(\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}|b_{k} \hat{f} (n_{k})|^{q} \right)^{1/q} \leq C \|f \|_{H_{1}}, \] for all \(f\in H_{1}\). This theorem extends a result obtained by \textit{K. M. Dyakonov} [``Generalized Hardy inequalities and pseudocontinuable functions'', Ark. Mat. 34, 231-244 (1996; Zbl 0868.30034)]. As a consequence, the authors obtain as special cases two fundamental results for \(f\in H_{1}\), namely, Hardy's inequality and Paley's theorem. The proof uses muliplier results. The authors also prove that under certain conditions their theorem is sharp.
