It is a well-known observation that, in finite dimensions, a Lie algebra bracket on the vector space \(\mathfrak g\) is equivalent to a linear Poisson structure on the dual space \(\mathfrak g^*\). The latter is also called a Lie-Poisson structure. The linear Poisson structures play an important role in the theory of integrable systems and quantization. Infinite-dimensional Lie-Poisson structures are studied in the paper in the framework of Banach spaces. The main difference and difficulty comes here from the fact that a given Banach space may be non-reflexive, or even may be not a dual space at all, so the standard duality fails. In this context extensions of Lie algebras and extensions of Lie-Poisson structures are studied, parallel to the finite-dimensional theory. Some physically motivated examples are offered.
