This paper deals with the diffraction and radiation of long waves by vertical boundaries on a rotating earth without \(\beta\)-effect. The disturbance is caused by a plane harmonic wave of frequency \(\omega\) which tends to step from the left. A functional equation in the Fourier transform domain is obtained. This equation is of the generalized form and admits a solution which is expressed in terms of constants. These constants satisfy an infinite set of linear algebraic equations. An asymptotic form of the final solution can be used to study the corresponding acoustic and electro-magnetic problems. It is shown that a step discontinuity in a plane boundary gives rise to diffracted waves which are similar to those of the Poincaré waves in the far field.
