The paper presents a constructive method for solving multipoint discrete boundary value problems. The main idea of this method consists in using a shooting type technique to transform the boundary value problem into an equivalent initial value problem, and is closely related with the method of chasing developed by Gel'fand and Lokutsiyevskii for second order linear differential equations [cf. \textit{I. S. Berezin} and \textit{N. P. Zhidkov}, Computing methods. II. (1965); see the review of the Russian original (1959; Zbl 0096.094)]. Finally some examples which are known to be numerically unstable are considered to show the applicability of the proposed method.
