The author investigates the connection between the lattice of periods of a finite set under group action [see \textit{G.-C. Rota}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 75, 330-334 (1969); \textit{G.-C. Rota} and \textit{D. A. Smith}, Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci., IV. Ser. 4, 637-646 (1977; Zbl 0367.05008)] and enumeration problems. As applications, the generating polynomial of the colouring functions and a combinatorial interpretation of the Jordan totient function are given.
