\textit{V. A. Smirnov} [ibid. 42, 197-207 (1983; Zbl 0596.03018)] gave a theorem according to which elementary ontology admits an embedding in the monadic second-order logic. The author was one of those who noted that the theorem was wrong: only elementary ontology augmented with an additional axiom \(\exists S(S\epsilon S)\) is embeddable in the other system. The corrected version of Smirnov's theorem as well as a converse of it are proved. Reviewer's remark. Meanwhile another paper by \textit{V. A. Smirnov} has appeared [ibid. 6, 1-15 (1987; Zbl 0632.03024)] in which the improved result is obtained indirectly as a consequence of another embedding theorem (of elementary ontology in universal monadic second order logic).
