Let G be a connected Lie group and E(\({\mathfrak g})\) the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of G. We study two basic problems which can be considered as generalizations of the classical moment problem when \(R^ d\) is replaced by G. The first one, called the generalized moment problem, is the question when a given linear functional f on E(\({\mathfrak g})\) is of the form \(f(.)=<dU(.)\phi,\phi >\), where U is a unitary representation of G. The second one, called the quantum moment problem, asks roughly speaking, when \(f(.)=tr dU(.)\rho\) for some positive trace class operator \(\rho\). Some general results are obtained. For two concrete Lie groups (SL(2,R) resp. its universal covering group and the Heisenberg group) these problems are studied in detail.
