Referring to better approximation properties of rational functions as compared to polynomials, the authors propose two sets of rational functions for use in the Petrov-Galerkin method as applied to the one- dimensional KdV-equation. Linear hat functions serve as trial functions. The test functions are obtained by linear combination of rational functions; a free parameter is used to provide upwinding. The authors also use product time. Several numerical results are shown in which the proposed method is seen to perform about as good or better than other methods by the accuracy reached for the same time and space step; there is no comparison of the respective computational expenses.
