Let G be a Chevalley group over a commutative ring K with identity. By UG(K) is denoted the unipotent subgroup of G. The automorphisms and commutator structure of UG(K) are determined by \textit{J. A. Gibbs} [J. Algebra 14, 203-228 (1970; Zbl 0191.020)] if K is a field of characteristic \(\neq 2\), 3 and by the author [Sib. Mat. Zh. 24, No.4, 64- 80 (1983; Zbl 0525.20031)] if \(G=A_ n\). In this paper the automorphisms of UG(K) are described under some restrictions on K, in particular, if K is an arbitrary field. The exceptional cases of groups UG(K) for small ranks of G are considered by the author [in Algebra Logika 29, 141-161 (1990)]. The results obtained solve a question of the reviewer [see Usp. Mat. Nauk 41, No.1, 57-96 (1986; Zbl 0602.20041), problem 1.5].
