The authors derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the number of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. These skew shapes, called \(m\)-strip diagonal diagrams, are formed by a body consisting of an elongated hexagonal shape with \(n\) columns, where the numbers of boxes in these columns are \[ \left\lceil\frac{m}{2}\right\rceil, \left\lceil\frac{m}{2}\right\rceil+1,\ldots,m,m,\ldots,m,m-1,m-2,\left\lceil\frac{m}{2}\right\rceil+1, \left\lceil\frac{m}{2}\right\rceil, \] having a head and a tail formed by Young diagrams that are rotated and connected to the body by leaning against the sides of the body. The identities obtained by the authors generalize the classical formulas of \textit{D. André} [``Développements de \(\sec x\) et de \(\text{tang} x\),'' C. R. LXXXVIII. 965-967 (1879; JFM 11.0187.01); ``Mémoire sur les permutations alternées,'' Résal J. (3) VII. 167--184 (1881; JFM 13.0152.02)] on the number of up-down permutations, which are in bijection with 2-strip diagonal diagrams, and are derived using a transfer operator approach extending the method of \textit{N. Elkies}, [``On the sums \(\sum_{k=-\infty}^\infty (4k+1)^{-n}\),'' Am. Math. Mon. 110, No.\,7, 561--573 (2003; Zbl 1083.11055)], combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.
