Let \(\mathbb{B}\) be the open unit ball in \(\mathbb{C}^n\), let \(dv\) be the normalized volume measure on \(\mathbb{B}\), and let \(P\) be the Bergman projection from \(L^{2}(\mathbb B,dv)\) onto the Bergman space \(L^{2}_a(\mathbb B,dv):=\{h \in L^{2}(\mathbb B,dv): h \text{ is analytic on } \mathbb{B}\}\) of the unit ball in \(\mathbb C^{n}\). In this paper, the author characterizes the membership of commutators of the form \([M_{f},P]\) in the general norm ideal \(C_{\Phi }\), where \(M_f\) denotes the operator of multiplication by the function \(f\) and the symmetric gauge function \(\Phi \) is allowed to be arbitrary. The relation \([M_f ,P] = H_f-H_{\bar{f}}^*\) shows that the study of the commutator \([M_f ,P]\) is equivalent to the so-called two-sided theory of Hankel operators. It should be noticed that \textit{K. Zhu} [Am. J. Math. 113, No. 1, 147--167 (1991; Zbl 0734.47017)] already treated the membership of \([M_f ,P]\) in the Schatten class \(C_p\) for \(2 \leq p < \infty\) and the author of present paper [Ill. J. Math. 46, No. 3, 913--928 (2002; Zbl 1042.47014)] extended the result of Zhu to the case \(2n/(n + 1) < p <2\).
