In earlier work, the author defined the notion of algebraic model category. Using an alternative perspective on the small object argument as developed by Garner, this approach clarifies many of the categorical properties possessed by a model category. Although many model structures used in practice are not defined in this way, they can in fact be shown to be algebraic. In the current paper, the author develops the theory further by introducing monoidal algebraic model categories. Here the underlying category has a monoidal structure which is compatible with the model structure via a pushout-product axiom. Developing the formulation of this axiom in the algebraic context turns out to require an investigation of the notion of cellularity in an algebraic model structure. The standard model structures on the categories of small categories and simplicial sets are shown to be monoidal algebraic model categories. Furthermore, the author emphasizes that this work enables one to consider enriched algebraic model structures, the subject of a future work.
