Let \(\tau^{(k)}(C)\) denote the number of inequivalent factorizations of the nonsingular matrix \(C\in M_k({\mathbb Z})\) in the form of a product of two matrices in \(M_k({\mathbb Z})\). Let \[ t^{(k)}(n)=\sum_C \tau^{(k)}(C), \] where the sum is over all matrices \(C\) of determinant \(n\) in the Smith normal form. It is known that \[ \sum_{n\leq x}t^{(2)}(n) = xS_2(\log x)+ \Delta_{2}(x), \] where \(S_2(X)\) is a second-degree polynomial. \textit{G. Bhowmik} and \textit{J. Wu} [Arch. Math. 69, No. 2, 95--104 (1997; Zbl 0907.11030)] have shown that \[ \Delta_{2}(x)=O(x^{5/8} \log^4 x). \] Let \(\tau_3^{(k)}(C)\) denote the number of inequivalent factorizations of the nonsingular matrix \(C\in M_k({\mathbb Z})\) in the form of a product of three matrices in \(M_k({\mathbb Z})\). The present author studies the function \[ t_3^{(2)}(n)=\sum_C \tau_3^{(2)}(C), \] where the sum is over all matrices \(C\) of determinant \(n\) in the Smith normal form. He proves the asymptotic formula \[ \sum_{n\leq x}t_3^{(2)}(n) = xP_5(\log x)+ \Delta_{2,3}(x), \] where \(P_5(X)\) is a polynomial of degree 5 and \(\Delta_{2,3}(x) = O(x^{75/88+\varepsilon})\) for every \(\varepsilon>0\), and the bound \[ \int_1^x(\Delta_{2,3}(x))^2 dx = O(x^{155/63}). \] This topic may be considered a matrix-theoretic analog of the Dirichlet divisor problem and its Piltz generalization.
