Given an algebraically closed field \(\mathbb{F}\) of characteristic zero and an affine reductive group \(G\) over \(\mathbb{F}\), the space of \(G\)-representations of a discrete finitely \(n\)-generated group \(\Gamma\) is an algebraic subset \(\mathrm{Hom}(\Gamma, G)\) of \(G^n\). The action of \(G\) on this set is given by conjugation. The \(G\)-character variety of \(\Gamma\) is the categorical quotient of the action: \(X_G(\Gamma)=\mathrm{Hom}(\Gamma, G) /\!/ G\). In the paper under review a finite, reasonable small generating set of the coordinate ring \(\mathbb{F}[X_G(\Gamma)]\) is given for an arbitrary classical matrix group \(G\). Finite sets of generators for the fields of rational functions on \(G\)-character varieties are also given for all exceptional algebraic groups.
