    Let \(X\) be an algebraic variety equipped with an action of a linear algebraic group \(G\). Let \(J_\infty X=Mor(\mathbb{C}[[t]],X)\) denote the arc space of \(X\). The paper describes an interplay between the equivariant cohomology groups \(H_G^*(X)=H_{J_\infty G}^*(J_\infty X)\) and geometry of the arc space. If \(X\) is smooth and \(J_\infty X-J_\infty D\) (for some proper closed invariant subvariety \(D\)) admits certain type of decomposition into equivariant acyclic cylinders then one obtains an additive basis of \(H_G^*(X)\). A formula for self-intersection in \(H_G^*(X)\) is given: for local complete intersection \(V\subset X\) the equality \([V]^{m+1}=[J_mV]\) holds. The theory is illustrated by examples and applications for toric varieties and determinatal varieties.
