Given Banach spaces operators \(A_i,B_i\in B(\mathcal{X})\), \(1\leq i\leq 2,\) let \(\Phi_{AB}\in B(B(\mathcal{X}))\) denote the elementary operator \(\Phi_{AB}(X)=A_1XB_1-A_2XB_2\). The main objective of the paper is to prove some properties of the operator \(\Phi_{AB}.\) In the second section, the authors give some various choices of the operators \(A_i, B_i\), \(1\leq i\leq 2,\) which imply the range-kernel orthogonality of \(\Phi_{AB}\) in the sense of Birkhoff. Hence the ascent of \(\Phi_{AB}\) is finite. In the third section, the authors applied the results obtained to prove some necessary and sufficient conditions for the range of \(\Phi_{AB}\) to be closed. In the last section, the authors give conditions on the tuples \(A\) and \(B\) such that \(\Phi^{ n}_{AB}(X)\) is compact for some \(n\geq1\), to prove that \(\Phi_{AB}\) is compact. Reviewer's remark. The results obtained generalize some given by \textit{J. Anderson} and \textit{C. Foiaş} [Pac. J. Math. 61, 313--325 (1975; Zbl 0324.47018)] and \textit{Y.-S. Tong} [Acta Sci. Math. 54, No. 1--2, 159--169 (1990; Zbl 0731.47038)].
