Let \(E\) be a Riesz space and \(I\) be a subspace of \(E\). Each of the following is equivalent to \(I\) being an ideal in \(E\): {\parindent=0.6cm\begin{itemize}\item[(1)] \(I\) is a Riesz subspace of \(E\) and for every \(x\in E\) and \(y,z\in I\) with \(y\leq x\leq z\), one has \(x\in I\). \item[(2)] For every \(x\in E\) and \(y\in I\) with \(|x|\leq |y|\), one has \(x\in I\). \item[(3)] For every \(y\in I\), the convex solid hull of \(\{y\}\) in \(E\) is contained in \(I\). \item[(4)] \(I\) is a Riesz subspace of \(E\) and there exist a Riesz space \(Y\) and a positive linear map \(T:E\rightarrow Y\) such that \(I = T^{-1}(0)\). \item[(5)] There exist a Riesz space \(Y\) and a Riesz homomorphism \(T:E\rightarrow Y\) such that \(I = T^{-1}(0)\). \end{itemize}} Recall that a subspace \(I\) of a partially ordered vector space \(X\) is called directed if \(I = I\cap X_+ - I\cap X_+\), where \(X_+ \) is the cone of \(X\). Generalizations of (1)--(5) to partially ordered vector spaces are discussed and it is shown that these generalizations are equivalent if \(I\) is a directed subspace.
