In this long paper the authors prove certain results on decompositions of the three-dimensional Euclidean space and their quasisymmetric equivalence. In particular, they answer in the negative a question posed by Heinonen and Semmes about the existence of a quasisymmetric map onto \(\mathbb{R}^{3+k}\) for the space of the form \(B \times \mathbb{R}^k\) where \(B\) is a linearly locally contractible and Ahlfors \(3\)-regular geometric realization of the decomposition space associated with the Bing double. Three of the main results of the paper are about decomposition spaces \(\mathbb{R}^3/G\) of so-called \textit{finite type} (which is defined in terms of welding structures with finitely many condensers and weldings) and assert that, under some additional conditions, these spaces admit Semmes metrics with respect to which these spaces or their products with \(\mathbb{R}^m\) are quasiconvex, Ahlfors \((3+m)\)-regular, Loewner and linearly locally contractible. One of these results gives a condition under which the aforementioned spaces are quasisymmetrically inequivalent with \(\mathbb{R}^m\) and the other is about quasisymmetric equivalence of \(\mathbb{R}^3/G\) and \(\mathbb{R}^3\) (if the decomposition space is of finite type and admits a defining sequence with a flat welding structure in \(\mathbb{R}^3\)). The paper also contains two interesting results about the decomposition of \(\mathbb{R}^3\) associated to the Bing double. The first of them says that this decomposition admits a metric that is Ahlfors \(3\)-regular, Loewner and linearly locally contractible but its product with \(\mathbb{R}^m\) is quasisymetrically inequivalent with \(\mathbb{R}^m\) for any \(m \geq 0\). The second result establishes quasisymmetric inequivalence of two products of this decomposition by \(\mathbb{R}\) equipped with the \(\ell_1\)-metrics induced by certain different Semmes metrics on this decomposition.
