A sufficient spectral condition is exhibited to guarantee that each continuous operator, not a multiple of the identity, belonging to the commutant of a bounded linear operator \(T\) on an infinite dimensional separable complex Banach space \(X\), has a hypercyclic multiple. No explicit description of the commutant of the operator \(T\) is necessary to get the result. Examples of operators satisfying the spectral condition are presented, like some weighted shifts, the adjoint of the discrete Cesàro operator acting on \(X= \ell_p\), \(1<p<\infty\), the continuous Cesàro operator on \(L_p(0,1)\), \(1<p<\infty\), and the adjoint of the Cesàro operator on the Hardy spaces \(H^p\), \(1<p<\infty\). Examples of operators that fail the assumptions of the main theorem are also given.
