The paper is devoted to the outline of the development of the Fourier analysis in Russia before and after Steklov's important contributions to this field -- in fact Vladimir Andreevich Steklov initiated rigorous studies of this topic. It starts with the description of Ostrogradsky's work on the heat equation in which he used the Fourier method. Next, the work on the Fourier method in Leningrad in the 30s through the 50s is presented. Much work was done in the case of multiple spatial variables (A. N. Krylov, I. G. Petrovsky, O. A. Ladyzhensaya and many others). An extensive bibliography is included.
