The article is a tribute to the mathematician Vladimir Andreevich Steklov (1864--1926) on the occasion of his 150th birthday.NEWLINENEWLINEThe first part contains a collection of translated excerpts from Steklov's diaries, and includes interesting reminiscences of his school days, his studies at St.~Petersburg University, the administrative work in the Academy of Sciences, and his daily schedule. The second part provides some background on \textit{V. A. Steklov}'s monograph [Basic problems of mathematical physics. 2nd ed., ed. by V. S. Vladimirov. Moskva: ``Nauka'' (1983; Zbl 0547.35004)], and the last part briefly summarizes some landmark results of potential theory in the 20th century with a special emphasis on the work of mathematicians from Steklov's school.
