This article describes some aspects in the life of the Russian mathematician, mechanician and physicist Vladimir Andreevich Steklov (9 January 1864--30 May 1926). Steklov was born in Nizhny Novgorod, which has a particular place in the content of the present paper. He graduated from the Kharkov University, where he was a student of Aleksandr Lyapunov. The paper under review also contains the close friendship of Steklov with the essay writer Nikolay Dobrolyubov. This paper includes several interesting details in the life of one of the most influential Russian mathematicians.
