In the case of the Lebesgue measure \(\mu\) on the real line, \textit{S. M. Buckley} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 340, No. 1, 253--272 (1993; Zbl 0795.42011)] proved that, if \(w\) belongs to the class of Muckenhoupt weights \(A_p\), then the norm of the classical Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator \(M\) satisfies \[ \|M\|_{L^p(w)}\leq C(p) [w]_{A_p}^{1/(p-1)}, \] where \[ [w]_{A_p(\mu)}:={\sup_{a<c} \left( \frac{1}{\mu(a,c) \int_a^c w\;d\mu}\right) \left( \frac{1}{\mu(a,c)} \int_a^c w^{1-p'}\;d\mu\right)^{p-1}}, \] and the power \([w]_{A_p}^{1/(p-1)}\) is the best possible bound (see also [\textit{A. K. Lerner}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 136, No. 8, 2829--2833 (2008; Zbl 1273.42019)]). More recently, in [\textit{T. Hytönen} and \textit{C. Pérez}, Anal. PDE 6, No. 4, 777--818 (2013; Zbl 1283.42032)] a better estimate for \(\|M\|_{L^p(w)}\) in terms of mixed constants was obtained: \[ \|M\|{}_{L^p(w)} \leq C(p) ([w]_{A_p[\sigma]_{A_{\infty}}})^{1/p},\tag{1} \] where \(\sigma=w^{1-p'}\) and \[ [\sigma]_{A\infty}:=\sup_{I \;\text{interval}} \frac{\int_I M(\sigma \chi_I) \;d\mu}{\int \sigma \;d\mu}. \] Since \([\sigma]_{A_{\infty}} \leq C [\sigma]_{A_{p'}} =C [w]_{A_p}^{p'-1}\), the original estimate of Buckley follows from (1). The main contribution of this paper is to obtain the corresponding Buckley's estimate for the one-sided maximal operator \(M_{\mu}^+\), where, for \(x\) being the point where the maximal operator is valued, the supremum is taken over all intervals of the form \([x,x+h)\), \(h>0\). The sharp bound is obtained in terms of a variant of the quantity \([w]_{A_p}\) adapted of the one-sided maximal operator. The better estimate involving mixed constants analogous to the one of Hytönen and Pérez is also obtained for the one-sided maximal operator.
