For a matrix \(g\in \mathrm{SL}(n, F)\) where \(F=\mathbb R\) or \(F=\mathbb C\), we can write \(g=Q(g)\), \(R(g)\) in a unique manner where \(Q(g)\in \mathrm{SO}(n)\) (if \(F=\mathbb R\)) or \(Q(g)\in \mathrm{SU}(n)\) (if \(F=\mathbb C\)) and \(R(g)\) is an upper triangular matrix over \(F\) with positive diagonal entires. In the paper under review, the author shows how the \(QR\) decomposition can be used to compute the Iwasawa decomposition for all classical Lie groups of noncompact type. This approach can also be used for the exeptional Lie groups.
