The authors show the linear stability of flux reconstruction schemes applied in conjunction with the Lax-Friedrichs formulation to a 2D conservation law with periodic boundary conditions. They suppose a linear advective flux and a uniform Cartesian mesh and use a suitable modified Sobolev norm. Furthermore, they restrict themselves to rectangular Cartesian meshes with linear quadrilateral elements and identify factors which can cause instabilities. Actually, they conclude that large growth rates of elements should be avoided in order to preempt the onset of instability. The main result is based on four fairly technical lemmas.
