    Let \[ R := \begin{bmatrix} \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}&\frac{-1}{\sqrt{2}}\\ \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}&\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \end{bmatrix} \] and let \(\mathbb{R}\) denote the set of all real numbers. Suppose that a set \(B \subset \mathbb{R}\) is such that \(\mathbb{R}\setminus B\) is a set of the first category. The author proves the following Hyers-Ulam stability theorem. Let \(Y\) be a Banach space, \(d \geq 0\) and \(\varepsilon > 0\). Suppose that \(f, g: \mathbb{R} \to Y\) satisfy the inequality \[ \|f(x + y) + f(x - y) - 2f(x) - 2g(y)\| \leq \varepsilon \] for all \((x,y) \in \Gamma_d\), where \[ \Gamma_d := R^{-1}(B \times B) \cap \{(z_1, z_2) \in \mathbb{R}^2: |z_1| + |z_2| \geq d \}. \] Then there exist a unique additive mapping \(a: \mathbb{R} \to Y\) and a unique quadratic mapping \(q: \mathbb{R} \to Y\) such that \[ \|f(x) - a(x) - q(x) - f(0)\| \leq 9\varepsilon, \;\|g(x) - q(x) \| \leq \frac{9}{2}\varepsilon \] for all \(x \in \mathbb{R}\). Similar stability theorems for the Jensen, Drygas and quadratic functional equations are also proved.
