Let \(M\) be an open connected orientable smooth surface and let \(\Lambda\) be a closed discrete subset of the unit ball \(\mathbb B\subset \mathbb C^2\). The authors prove that there exists a complex structure on \(M\) such that \(M\) admits a complete proper holomorphic embedding into \(\mathbb B\) whose image contains \(\Lambda\). The authors and \textit{F. J. López} [``A construction of complete complex hypersurfaces in the ball with control on the topology'', J. Reine Angew. Math. (to appear), \url{arXiv:1509.02283}] showed using holomorphic automorphisms that the unit ball \(\mathbb B\subset \mathbb C^2\) admits complete properly embedded complex curves with arbitrary finite topology. The second author [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 444, No. 2, 827--838 (2016; Zbl 1351.32036)] constructed a complete proper holomorphic embedding from the unit disc into \(\mathbb B\) whose image contains any given closed discrete set. The first author and \textit{F. J. López} [J. Geom. Anal. 23, No. 4, 1794--1805 (2013; Zbl 1277.32008)] constructed properly embedded complex curves in \(\mathbb C^2\) with arbitrary topology. In the present paper, the authors build on ideas from all the above cited papers.
