The aim of this paper is to explore the consequences of the uniqueness theorem for the reduced \(C^*\)-algebra of a Hausdorff étale groupoid proved in [\textit{J. H. Brown} et al., Integral Equations Oper. Theory 85, No. 1, 109--126 (2016; Zbl 1360.46046)] in the framework of the universal groupoids associated to inverse semigroups introduced by \textit{A. L. T. Paterson} in [Groupoids, inverse semigroups, and their operator algebras. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser (1999; Zbl 0913.22001)] and, more generally, of groupoids of germs related to inverse semigroup actions constructed by \textit{R. Exel} [Bull. Braz. Math. Soc. (N.S.) 39, No. 2, 191--313 (2008; Zbl 1173.46035)]. The authors manage to connect the algebraic structure of the inverse semigroup to the structure of the reduced \(C^*\)-algebra for various classes of inverse semigroups. In order to apply the results to full \(C^*\)-algebras, the authors also study the amenability of the universal groupoid for several classes of inverse semigroups.
