The main scope of this paper is to investigate the way a nonsmooth subdifferential of a nonconvex integral function can be derived or estimated by means of the subdifferential of the corresponding integrand. Employing regularity hypotheses (a short discussion about various regularity notions can be found in the introduction), the results turn out to be exact. Such statements are proven for several types of subdifferentials, such as the Clarke one, the Mordukhovich one or the Dini-Hadamard one. The results are then applied to so-called Ekeland functions, a class that extends the conjugate functions from the convex case, generalizing thus some early work of Rockafellar (to whom this paper is dedicated) on integrals of conjugates of convex functions.
