The authors investigate zero stability of linear multistep methods on compact intervals and smooth nonuniform grids. In numerical computations in practice, control on the step size can be achieved using smooth and small step size changes. The resulting grid can be modelled as the image of an equidistance grid under a smooth deformaton map. Such a model is appropriate to any fixed order method operating in its asymptotic regime when applied to smooth problems. The results obtained are illustrated for BDF-type methods.
