If \(\Psi\) is a Young function not satisfying the \(\Delta_2\)-condition, but whose conjugate function satisfies it, then it is known that \(E^\Psi\), the closure of \(L_\infty\) in the Orlicz space \(L^\Psi\), is an \(M\)-ideal in its bidual \(L^\psi\) for the Luxemburg norm, but this is not so for the Orlicz norm. The authors provide another equivalent norm on \(L^\Psi\) for which \(E^\Psi\) is an \(M\)-ideal for certain \(\Psi\); this norm is defined in terms of nonincreasing rearrangements, and it permits them to use the approach in [\textit{K. M. Perfekt}, Math. Scand. 121, No. 1, 151--160 (2017; Zbl 1434.46008)]. They also provide distance formulas to \(E^\Psi\), hence to \(L_\infty\), for this norm.
