A mixed abelian group \(G\) is called an \(sp\)-group if it can be embedded in a natural way in the direct product of its primary components. In the present paper, the authors provide a comprehensive study of these groups, with a special attention to the case of mixed groups of finite torsion-free rank. Moreover, the paper contains a very detailed and useful study of the class of rings of pseudo-rational integers (associated to some characteristics). These rings are very useful in the study of \(sp\)-groups since there are some equivalences between categories of \(sp\)-groups and categories of (finitely generated) modules over rings of pseudo-rational integers, [\textit{A. A. Fomin}, in: Abelian groups and modules. Proceedings of the international conference in Dublin, Ireland, August 10--14, 1998. Basel: Birkhäuser. 87--100 (1999; Zbl 0947.20037)].
