This rich article treats the cohomology and homotopy theory of embedding tensors and Lie-Leibniz triples.\par Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a Lie algebra and \(V\) be a \({\mathfrak g}\)-module. An \textit{embedding tensor} is a linear map \(T:V\to{\mathfrak g}\) such that for all \(u,v\in V\), we have \[[Tu,Tv]=T(Tu\cdot v).\] A \textit{Lie-Leibniz triple} is a triple \(({\mathfrak g},V,T)\) where \(T\) is a embedding tenor with respect to \({\mathfrak g}\) and \(V\). The name comes from the fact that (like in Loday-Pirashvili's category of linear maps), the space \(V\) acquires the structure of a Leibniz algebra with respect to the bracket \[[u,v]:=Tu\cdot v.\] The authors construct a graded Lie algebra structure on \[\bigoplus_{k=1}^{\infty}\Hom(\otimes^k V,{\mathfrak g})\] such that its Maurer-Cartan elements are precisely the embedding tensors. This construction (via the derived bracket formalism) is then used to define a cohomology theory governing the deformations of embedding tensors. Moreover, the authors construct an \(L_{\infty}\)-algebra using Voronov's higher brackets formalism from the differential graded Lie algebra struture on \[\bigoplus_{k=1}^{\infty}\Hom(\otimes^k ({\mathfrak g}\oplus V),{\mathfrak g}\oplus V),\] the abelian subalgebra \({\mathfrak h}:=\bigoplus_{k=0}^{\infty}\Hom(\otimes^{n+1} V,{\mathfrak g})\) and a projection \(P\) onto \({\mathfrak h}\) such that its Maurer-Cartan elements are precisely the Lie-Leibniz triples. The authors explore then the cohomology of Lie-Leibniz triples and show that it is related to deformations and central extensions in the usual way. In a last section, the authors generalize their theory to homotopy embedding tensors relaxing definitions up to homotopy. They show that homotopy embedding tensors give rise to \(Leibniz_{\infty}\)-algebras which then give rise to \(L_{\infty}\)-algebras via a generalization of the construction of an \(L_{\infty}\)-algebra out of a Leibniz algebra due to \textit{A. Kotov} and \textit{T. Strobl} [Commun. Math. Phys. 376, No. 1, 235--258 (2020; Zbl 1439.81076)].
