For a meromorphic function \(f\) and a complex number \(q\) satisfying \(0<\vert q\vert <1\), the Jackson difference operator \(D_q f\) is defined by \[D_q f(z) =\frac{f(qz)-f(z)}{qz-z}.\] The authors develop Nevanlinna theory for this operator. For example they prove analogues of the lemma on the logarithmic derivative and the second fundamental theorem, where the derivative \(f'\) is replaced by \(D_q f\). They use these results to study linear \(q\)-difference equations. For example, they determine the growth of solutions of the equation \(D_q^kf+Af=0\).
