The main results of the paper deal with the flatness property of the ring \(\mathrm{Int}(D)\) of integer-valued polynomials for an integral domain \(D\). It has been conjectured that \(\mathrm{Int}(D)\) is a flat \(D\)-module. This is known for large classes of domains (see e.g. [\textit{J. Elliott}, Commun. Algebra 39, No. 11, 4128--4147 (2011; Zbl 1247.13022)]) In Theorem 1 the authors prove that this holds for locally essential \(D\) and give in this case a sufficient condition for \(Int(D)\) to be locally free over \(D\). In Theorems 2 and 3 it is shown that if \(D\) is either a strong Mori domain or an essential domain, then \(\mathrm{Int}(D)\) is flat over \(D[X]\) if and only if \(\mathrm{Int}(D)=D[X]\). The paper contains also several interesting corollaries and examples.
