The paper refers to some results of G. D. Birkhoff and J. Tamarkin who observed that regular higher-order BVP has the so-called equiconvergence property. The long article contains many results of the author and other Russian mathematicians which are not easy to obtain. The theorems are of the following form: establish necessary and sufficient conditions for \[ \lim_{r\to\infty} \|S_r(x)- \sigma_r(f)\|_{C(K)}= 0, \] where \(S_r(x)\) is a general series in eigenfunctions \(\{u_n\}\), \[ S_r(x)= \sum_{|u_n|\leq r} c_k(f) u_k(x),\quad \sigma_r(x)= \int_R {\sin r(x-s)\over \pi(x-s)} f(s) ds. \] The paper contains the Birkhoff-regular problem, Stone-regularity, functional-differential perturbations, Schrödinger operator, and general equiconvergence problems.
