Absolute stability was introduced in the mid 1940s to study stability of linear systems featuring a nonlinear feedback component whose characteristics are poorly known. Here, the absolute stabilization problem (i.e. the problem of designing a compensator or filter rendering a system absolutely stable) is straightforwardly converted into an \(H_\infty\) stabilization problem. Standard linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization techniques are then applied to solve the \(H_\infty\) design problem.
