An equidistant decomposition of a Riemannian manifold \(M\) defines a \textit{submetry} \(P:M \longrightarrow Y\) from the manifold onto the space \(Y\) of leaves endowed with the induced natural distance. A submetry maps balls of radius \(R\) into balls of the same radius \(R.\) The paper studies topological and geometric properties of equidistant decompositions. For example it is shown that the restriction of the submetry \(P\) onto the dense regular part can be seen as a \(C^{1,1}\)-Riemannian submersion. Finally a number of open problems is listed.
